Microgrid - a milestone energy resilience project for ANAD

Staff Reports | ANAD Public Affairs Office

ANNISTON, Ala. — Anniston Army Depot is partnering with the Office of Energy Initiatives to provide energy resilience and security to the depot through a microgrid, which, combined with several additional projects, will move ANAD closer to being self-reliant and resilient in the event of future power disruptions.

The first phase of the microgrid project will provide ANAD with the capability to maintain mission-critical operations and is expected to be fully operational by the end of September.

Currently, ANAD, the OEI and the Army Corps of Engineers are installing the first of ANAD’s microgrid projects, funded through the Energy Resilience and Conservation Investment Program. Phase 1 includes three 2.5-megawatt natural gas generators. These generators, along with ANAD’s solar equipment, can support a large portion of the buildings inside Nichols Industrial Complex during major electrical outages.

Phase 2, which is expected to receive ERCIP funding in fiscal year 2025, will complete the backup coverage. ANAD and the OEI completed planning of Phase 2 in FY22. “This was a unique project requiring many hours of planning and coordination, showing our ability to work as a team,” said Brian Freeman, ANAD engineer and project manager. “This was a milestone energy resilience project for ANAD.”

The microgrid project is just one of many improvements ANAD has made in recent years in efforts to modernize its facilities. “Our microgrid project is another key aspect of the Anniston modernization strategy,” said Col. Eric McCoy, depot commander. “Energy resiliency, security, cost savings and environmental sustainability all play vital roles for our depot as we prepare to sustain the Army of 2030.”

ANAD recently completed a $22 million Utility and Energy Services Contract project which included improvements to the infrastructure, energy-efficient upgrades and increased safety features. Additionally, the depot has invested in several state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities, such as 3D printing and robotic welding, further enhancing its ability to remanufacture and maintain military equipment. These investments have allowed ANAD to ensure its commitment to providing quality service for our warfighters for years to come.
